Abstract
The socio-historical development of Zaplanje has been influenced by its geographical location. Although surrounded by mountain ranges, Zaplanje connects Nišava Valley and South Morava Valley by road. This article emphasizes the significance of comprehensive research and the preservation of marginalized cultural and historical heritage in this underexplored region of southeastern Serbia. The presence of historical and cultural monuments, especially churches, indicates the depth and long-term spiritual heritage of this small region. The available historical sources provide some information about the churches in Zaplanje, most of which hold the status of previous protection. Three of them have been recognized as cultural monuments, and one as a cultural monument of great importance.
