Abstract

The long war of 1593-1606 left significant consequences in the interior of the Balkans, although this area had not directly affected by the war. After the conclusion of peace in the year of 1606., trade in the interior of the Balkans revived and the importance of the cities on the Constantinople road grew. The paper presents, for the first time in Serbian, a critically edited text of the inscription on the bridge in Niš, which was printed in German as a leaflet, under the title Insctiption so auf der zu Nissa über Fluß Nisschova gebauten steineren Brucken. Based on relevant materials and literature, the paper also discusses the general circumstances in the interior of the Ottoman Balkans and in the analyzed period.
