RELATIONS BETWEEN THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE REPUBLIC OF VENICE AND THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE FROM XV TО XVIII CENTURY

Abstract

This paper outlines the key aspects of relations between the representatives of the Republic of Venice and the representatives of the Ottoman Empire. In the fifteenth century the Ottoman Empire gained worldwide importance and this reflected in various areas. They developed relations with all states in both the East and the West. Since the fifteenth century the relations between the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire had gradually strengthened. The key task of Venetian consuls was to protect their fellow countrymen in foreign countries. The most important representative had a title of baila. The Sultanate of Women also played an important role in diplomatic ties between the Ottoman Empire and the Venetian Republic as the harem was a place of many important dealings. We can learn about the everyday life of foreign envoys in Constantinople mostly from their reports and memoirs.
