FINE ARTS IN SERBIA WITH ITS PROVINCES IN 1978: SERBIAN ARTISTS AT THE JOINT EXHIBITION OF ULUS, ULUV AND ULUK IN BELGRADE

Abstract

This paper examines the joint exhibition of the Association of Fine Artists of Serbia (ULUS), the Association of Fine Artists of Vojvodina (ULUV), and the Association of Fine Artists of Kosovo (ULUK), held in Belgrade in 1978, as an important event in the cultural history of the Socialist Republic of Serbia. Based on the exhibition catalogue and relevant scholarly literature, the study analyzes the institutional organization of artistic life in Serbia following the constitutional changes of 1974 and considers the exhibition as the first joint presentation of the three professional associations. Special attention is devoted to the structure of the ULUK exhibition and to the participation of Serbian artists from Kosovo and Metohija, whose works formed an integral part of the association’s presentation. Rather than treating them as a separate artistic group, the paper examines their contribution within the broader framework of ULUK and the contemporary visual arts scene in Kosovo. The exhibition catalogue is interpreted not only as a record of the event but also as a valuable historical source for understanding the institutional organization, exhibition practice, and cultural life of Serbia in the late 1970s.
